The Display
A dedicated household interface and browser analytics platform that makes a Cosy heat pump visible, understandable and easier to operate.
Sole creator, from need to delivered product.
I conceived and built the entire product. Product direction, physical integration, interface design, Octopus Energy API integration, local data processing, browser dashboard, ordering system, documentation and customer support are all my work.
The project began with a simple usability problem: valuable heating information existed, but it was hidden behind a phone and app navigation. A shared household system needed a shared, glanceable interface.
The result moved beyond a personal prototype into an actively maintained hardware and software product, with ordering, packaged delivery, setup guidance and ongoing API compatibility updates.
The right information at the moment it matters.
The interface changes with the heat pump’s state. It makes normal operation reassuring and exceptions difficult to miss.
- Heating stateInstant confirmation of idle, active and dual-zone operation.
- Boost controlClear activation, independent zone logic and countdown timers.
- Zone temperaturesRoom readings and targets presented together at a glance.
- Defrost visibilityExplains an automatic cycle that can otherwise look like a fault.
- Fault reportingImportant system information surfaces without searching an app.
- Schedule managementHeating and hot-water plans can be reviewed and adjusted directly.
Local first, private by design.
The Display talks directly to Octopus Energy. Heating data and API credentials stay on the customer’s device rather than passing through a product cloud.
This removes an unnecessary middle layer, avoids a subscription dependency and means the installed product continues to operate independently of the sales website.
Software updates are packaged and tested to maintain compatibility as the upstream API changes, then used to deliver interface and analytics improvements over time.
From live status to long-term evidence.
Every Display includes a browser-based dashboard for exploring heat-pump behaviour beyond the five-inch screen.
Processed sensor data supports COP and power tracking, defrost detection, heating and hot-water analysis, daily-to-yearly charts and custom graph building. Export-friendly views keep the owner in control of further analysis.
A complete product, not a loose prototype.
The engineering includes the parts customers experience after the code is finished.
Each unit is supplied with mounting options, power hardware, a quick-start guide and integration support. Ordering, staged payment, build communication, packaging and post-delivery updates are part of the same system.

The Display is an independent smart-home project compatible with Octopus Cosy Heat Pumps. It is not an official Octopus Energy product.
